INTERPOL Firearm Forensics Symposium: What Is IFFS?
The INTERPOL Firearms Forensics Symposium (IFFS) is a recurring international conference organised under the auspices of INTERPOL’s Firearms Programme. It brings together law enforcement officials, forensic scientists, public safety administrators, prosecutors, and policymakers from member countries to advance intelligence-led approaches to firearm-related crime.
Each edition focuses on three core objectives: improving firearm recovery and tracing protocols, strengthening cross-border intelligence sharing, and developing legal frameworks that help investigators build stronger cases. The symposium series has grown to become a reference point for international cooperation on ballistics, crime gun intelligence, and the intersection of organised crime with illicit arms trafficking.
IFFS 2017 – Fourth Edition, Dubrovnik
We are honoured to have partnered with INTERPOL on the fourth edition of IFFS, which brought together the world’s foremost law enforcement officials, public safety administrators, policymakers, and forensic science experts. Held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, IFFS 2017 delivered a three-day comprehensive programme covering a broad spectrum of topics related to preventing, investigating, and solving firearm-related crime.
Participants explored firearm recovery protocols and best practices for providing investigators with timely leads, examined how to structure multi-disciplinary intelligence units for effective cross-border data sharing, discussed legislative improvements that better equip investigators to solve firearm crimes, and addressed the documented links between organised crime networks and terrorism. The symposium’s hands-on format — described as “the only symposium that brings together the best minds in law enforcement” — ensured that attendees left with practical methods for prioritising evidence and generating investigator leads.
IFFS 2017 fulfilled its objective of addressing the most pressing challenges facing law enforcement in their efforts to reduce and resolve firearm-related crime. The exchange of operational knowledge among prosecutors, forensic specialists, and policymakers produced actionable frameworks that participating jurisdictions adopted in their national procedures.
Interpol Red Notice Lawyer to Challenge Interpol Red Notice and Diffusion
INTERPOL is the world’s largest international police organisation, with 190 member countries. They ensure that notices are issued within the bounds of INTERPOL’s Rules on the Processing of Data, challenge notices where the underlying request does not meet evidentiary or proportionality standards, and liaise with the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files (CCF) to seek correction or deletion of unlawfully held data. IFFS 2020 – Cancelled Due to the Pandemic
The in-person 2020 INTERPOL Firearm Forensics Symposium could not proceed as scheduled due to the evolving pandemic situation. The decision to cancel the physical event reflected the operational realities facing international travel and large-scale gatherings across INTERPOL’s 190 member countries.
Rather than defer the programme indefinitely, INTERPOL’s Forensic Technology team restructured the event into a virtual format. The rescheduled online symposium was announced for May 4 to 6, 2021, and was to be delivered in all four official INTERPOL languages: English, French, Spanish, and Arabic — ensuring equitable access for participants from across the organisation’s membership.
IFFS 2021 – Virtual International Forensic & Firearms Symposium
The virtual IFFS 2021 symposium took place in May 2021 as the dedicated online continuation of the IFFS programme. Organised by INTERPOL’s Firearms Programme and hosted through a dedicated event platform, it maintained the series’ focus on crime gun intelligence, ballistic evidence standards, and international cooperation in firearm tracing.
The virtual format allowed broader participation from jurisdictions that had historically been unable to send delegations to in-person editions. Sessions addressed digital tools for firearm tracing, updates to INTERPOL’s iARMS database, and procedural developments in cross-border firearms seizure and evidence sharing. Legal practitioners attending the symposium gained direct insight into the evidentiary and procedural expectations that law enforcement agencies apply when building international firearms cases — knowledge directly relevant to any legal strategy involving Interpol notices or extradition requests with a firearms component.
